Do installation businesses need general liability insurance?
Installation- and contractor-trade businesses often work at client sites and risk causing accidental property damage or bodily injury. General liability helps protect against lawsuits and related legal costs.
What is a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP), and is it right for installers?
A BOP bundles general liability insurance with commercial property insurance, often at a lower cost. It can be a cost-efficient option for installation contractors with tools, inventory, or a small shop.
How much does insurance cost for installation contractors?
Premiums vary based on type of work (flooring, HVAC, etc.), number of employees, business revenue, location, claim history, and desired policy limits. Some typical premiums are published for general liability, workers’ comp, etc.
What does workers’ compensation cover for installation businesses?
Workers’ compensation insurance covers medical expenses and lost wages if your employees are injured on the job. It’s separate from general liability, which covers third-party injuries.
What is installation floater (& how is it different from tools & equipment insurance)?
Installation floater insurance protects materials, equipment, and labor during transit or while on site (even before installation is complete). Tools & equipment insurance usually covers owned equipment, especially when moving between sites or stored off site.
What are Certificates of Insurance (COI), and why do clients ask for them?
A COI is a document showing your insurance coverage, limits, effective dates, etc. Clients or general contractors often require them before starting work to ensure you have valid liability protection.
Can I bundle like coverages to save money?
Yes. Many installers can bundle general liability with property coverage or tools coverage (via a BOP or package policy) to reduce cost and simplify management of multiple policies.
What coverage limits should I consider?
Coverage amounts depend on risk level. Limits often start around $1 million per occurrence for general liability, with aggregate limits higher. Higher limits may be required by clients or contracts.
